Pradman P. Kaul is chairman and chief executive officer of Hughes Network Systems (HNS).
HNS, a unit of Hughes Electronics Corporation, is one of the world's leading suppliers of satellite based broadband products and services using interactive VSAT (very small aperture terminal) products. With annual revenues of approximately $1.5 billion, HNS provides satellite based enterprise and consumer networks, mobile satellite networks and terminals, DIRECTV® set-top boxes, DirecPC™ (a high speed Internet/package delivery system) services, and broadband systems for local multipoint distribution services (LMDS). Headquartered in Germantown, MD, HNS was acquired by HUGHES in 1987.
Previously, Kaul was president and chief operating officer of HNS, and had earlier served as executive vice president and director of engineering. Before joining Hughes Network Systems, Kaul was manager of the High Speed Logic Program at COMSAT Laboratories in Clarksburg, MD, where he worked on the transmission of color television signals using various bandwidth compression techniques.
Mr. Kaul received a master of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from George Washington University. He holds numerous patents and has published articles and papers on a variety of technical topics concerning satellite communications.
Mr. Kaul is a senior member of the IEEE. He was also selected as a "Distinguished Alumnus" of the University of California, Berkeley in 1999 and was recently awarded the IEEE Millenium medal.
