Biography

Michael J. Gaines is corporate senior vice president and chief financial officer of Hughes Electronics Corporation. Gaines also is a member of the Hughes Electronics executive and management committees, the company's two top leadership groups.

Gaines was elected corporate senior vice president in April 2003. He was named chief financial officer in June 2001. Gaines oversees all companywide financial activities, including treasury, risk management, investor relations, financial accounting and reporting, tax planning and compliance, business planning, internal audit and investment management of employee benefit plans.

Prior to his appointment as CFO, Gaines was corporate vice president, finance, and treasurer for Hughes Electronics since July 2000, and was responsible for all treasury functions for the corporation and handled other finance-related activities in support of the chief financial officer.

Gaines was previously vice president, controller and chief accounting officer of Hughes Electronics with oversight for corporate financial accounting and planning functions. He was named to this position in October 1997.

Gaines joined the company in 1991 as a division controller for Hughes Aircraft Company’s Radar Systems Group. From 1992-94, he was sector accounting manager for Hughes Aircraft’s Aerospace and Defense Sector. He was named director of accounting for Hughes Electronics in 1994, supervising consolidation, general accounting, corporate management information systems and payroll. In 1996, he was named assistant corporate controller, supervising corporate level financial planning and accounting groups.

Prior to joining HUGHES, Gaines was a manager at Deloitte & Touche, supervising audit services to a number of large corporations, including Honeywell, Rockwell and Hughes.

Gaines is a member of the board of directors of PanAmSat Corporation, which is 81 percent owned by Hughes Electronics. He also is a Certified Public Accountant.

Born April 7, 1958, in Pasadena, Calif., Gaines received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1980 from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and his MBA degree in 1983 from UCLA Graduate School of Management.

Gaines and his family reside in Westchester, Calif.
