Biography

Lawrence N. Chapman is president and chief operating officer of DIRECTV Latin America, LLC, the leading pay television service in Latin America and the Caribbean. Chapman was named president and COO of DIRECTV Latin America, LLC, in March 2003. Hughes Electronics, through its DIRECTV Latin America Holdings subsidiary, owns 75 percent of DIRECTV Latin America, which provides direct-to-home digital satellite television service in 28 countries. Darlene Investments LLC, an affiliate of the Cisneros Group of Companies, and Grupo Clarín are also owners of DIRECTV Latin America, LLC.

A member of the original team to launch the DIRECTV service in the United States, Chapman was most recently executive vice president of DIRECTV, Inc., and was responsible for the company's product development initiatives, marketing and advertising.

Prior to his post as executive vice president in 2001, Chapman served in a number of capacities for DIRECTV. From March 2000 through August 2001, Chapman was president of DIRECTV Global Digital Media, Inc., a business unit of Hughes Electronics, which was responsible for the development and acquisition of content and television-based interactive services for the worldwide DIRECTV businesses. He was senior vice president of Special Markets and Distribution, where he was responsible for the growth and development of the DIRECTV Special Markets department, and was senior vice president of Programming, where he was responsible for the planning, acquisition and scheduling of programming for DIRECTV. In addition, as vice president of Business Affairs and Development, Chapman directed theatrical program acquisition activities involving major Hollywood movie studios and also established relationships with key DIRECTV business partners and vendors.

Before his assignments with DIRECTV, Chapman served in various business development roles at Hughes Communications, Inc. (HCI), a former satellite services subsidiary of Hughes Electronics, where he was responsible for developing and implementing marketing strategies for the sale of capacity on HCI's Ku-band satellites.

From 1985 to 1989, Chapman was deputy general manager for the Japan Communications Satellite Company (JCSAT), which is based in Yokohama, Japan, and during that time was 30 percent owned by HCI. While in Japan, Chapman's responsibilities included strategic planning, business development and regulatory activities for the then start-up venture.

Chapman joined Hughes Aircraft Company, the precursor to Hughes Electronics, in 1980. He holds MS and BS degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida.

Born in England on Aug. 20, 1954, Chapman currently resides in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
