Biography12/2003Chase Carey is president and chief executive officer of Hughes Electronics Corporation. He was elected to the position by the Hughes Board of Directors in December 2003. He was also elected to the Hughes Board of Directors in December 2003. Carey joined Hughes in December 2003 after News Corporation Ltd. purchased shares totaling 34 percent of the outstanding shares of Hughes. This stake in Hughes was placed in News Corp’s 80.6 percent subsidiary, Fox Entertainment Group. Prior to joining Hughes, Carey was co-chief operating officer of News Corp. and president and chief executive officer of Sky Global Networks until his resignation in January 2002. He also served as chairman and chief executive officer of the Fox Television Group until 2001. He continued as a member of the Board of Directors of News Corp. and as a consultant to the company. Carey played a central role in managing the operations and strategy of News Corp. with particular focus on its worldwide television business that encompasses the FOX network, Fox Television Stations, Fox’s cable programming group, and News Corp.’s international satellite operations. As a senior executive at Fox and News Corp. from 1988 Carey had a key role in the growth and success of News Corp. Among key initiatives he led were the launch and growth of Fox Sports, the expansion of the Fox Television Stations group from seven stations to the present 35 stations, the emergence of Fox cable channels such as Fox News Channel, FX and the National Geographic Channel, and the building of satellite platforms in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Carey joined Fox in 1988 and served in numerous roles, including executive vice president of Fox, Inc. from 1992 to 1994, chairman and chief executive officer of the Fox Television Group beginning in 1994 and co-chief operating officer of News Corp. from 1996. Prior to Joining News Corp. he was employed at Columbia Pictures in senior capacities from 1981 to 1987. In addition to the News Corp. Board, Carey is also a member of the Board
of Directors of Gateway, Inc. and Yell Group plc. He is a Trustee of Colgate
University and a graduate of Colgate University and Harvard Business School.
He lives with his wife and two children in the New York City area. |
